Much like the leaves barely hanging onto their trees, the East Broad Top was struggling to stay afloat in November of 1955. The eastern titan of narrow gauge was fighting for survival as demand for coal was diminishing, and ganister demands in Mount Union kept the trains running. When I arrived with my camera in the sleepy town of Orbisonia, I found engine 16 being readied for the day. A few pa...

In the past year or so I have fallen head first into studying the East Broad Top Railroad. 50 years of tourist operations over the same 5 miles have lead to a thought that these little mikados had soft exhausts and relatively quiet. I had been skeptical of this claim, nobody had heard them run up to Robertsdale with empties or fight loads over McMullins or Jordan Summit. On the Dynamo Productio...

The 2023 Lego Ideas Orient Express set was leaked on October 11th, 2023. I have never seen the Lego Train community so polarized over this release, and the negative opinions are loud and harsh. It is a fair assumption to say that the postwar boom of passenger diesels caught the eye of the railfans, railroad employees and the public in a way no other locomotives could. Today their allure lies in their rarity, simply scrapped after a long working life, or cut in their prime thanks to dwindling passengers in the 1960. One such class that was almost extinct was the ALCO PA, the six axle p...
East Broad Top 16: The Winter Spectacular Return

When you quarter the wheels dont offset them by 90 Because its not accurate. Normally wheels are offset by 45 so you dont stall with two pistons because they both can center in the piston and not receive enough steam to move.

The engine from EMD was rated at 5000hp . . . It could be tweaked to 5500hp. These SD80's were the sh!t, only problem was they were fuel hogs which made them over time become odd balls. The newer V12 engines are able to produce the same starting tracktive effort with fewer Cylinders enabling the V12 to get better fuel mileage by quite a bit actually so the SD80's fate got written and they were purged almost over nite. I couldn't believe it thay were there one day gone the next. Big business at play right before our eyes . . . The EMD 2-stroke V engines are in my eyes still the best railroad engines ever derived on account of the longevity reliability just the whole thing. There's still SW1's GP7's GP9's still put'n in a full day's work all over the US. GE can't make that claim. What happened was the lobbyists were paid to get laws in place to get the 2-stroke sidelined using the EPA to do it. And now that everybody's went 4-stroke designed engines the 2-stroke as of today can be made tier 4 compliant . . . Go figure . . . The other laws implemented were the engines in locomotives had a Ten Year Service Life imposed on them the same time the Tier 4 laws were implemented . . . Politics just works for the ultra rich and not for the people that need the correct Politics . . . It's all big business

Also my all-time personal fave, S2M, which the Burlington used on its E units and cab cars. The vid I have in mind for the latter is of a cab car that I’m 99% sure is ex-CB&Q/BN. NS never used the SD80MAC's properly. That is a bit of a slag out of Sumner. NS thought that you could shove a 150000+ ton train with one unit uphill. They always under-powered their trains and used the SD80MAC's in helper service, for the most part. I'm glad that I retired from that backwards railroad.

A few tweaks and this would go from a 'good' to a 'great' brick kit. The digital instructions also skip many crucial steps - you've been warned!
